What
is the purpose of a home study?
The
home study process will validate that your family is medically,
emotionally, physically and financially ready to parent an adopted
child. It is not a judgment on your personal lives or parenting styles.
There are many types of families and many types of wonderful parents. International Adoption Guides wants to make sure that you are ready to parent an adopted child and that the country that you have chosen fits your personal adoption preferences.
Adoption Home Study - Domestic and International:
The study is conducted according to the NC Administrative Code with a minimum of one home visit, and individual visits with each member of the household, criminal and child abuse background checks, references, supporting documents, and discussions of a variety of related topics. Counseling, education and preparation services are included in the study process. An initial, informational office visit is offered at no charge.
Post Placement Supervision:
Generally home visits are required in a domestic adoption and or international adoption after a child is placed in your home. Specifics will vary depending on if your placement was through an agency or an attorney, or if international, the agreement made with that country, generally these are at three, six and twelve months after arrival home, but these vary by country. The purpose is to help you and the child with adjustment and to provide information to the court for finalization, or to the country of origin for their records. Issues are discussed such as developmental delays, developmental repetitions, developmental assessment programs, working with your child about adoption issues and so forth. All required forms will be filled out and mailed to your placing agency as required by the State and or Country of Adoption.
